The Benefits of Making Your Own Bohemian Clothes
Guest post by Helen Spencer

"Thank you, mom, for teaching me how to sew a long time ago."
This is what comes to my mind when I go window shopping for clothes and see what is offered to customers.

Not only are the price tags pretty high, but the articles also don't quite fit my style. Even though boho fashion has made a comeback and is popular once again, I rarely find something that I would actually wear every day. I do find inspiration during these browsing sessions though; Inspiration that helps me make my own, ideal piece of clothing.

If you have enough skill when it comes to sewing, according to the sewing blog Hellosewing you too can easily ditch fast fashion and start making your own clothes.

First things first, you don't have to stop buying finished clothing altogether just because you make your own clothes. If, once in a while, you find a piece you would love to wear, don't be afraid to buy it. Making your own clothes doesn't forbid you to buy new ones. It just offers you a possibility to spend less money on them.

Any amount of money you would spend on a finished dress is usually enough for at least two identical ones if you're the person sewing them. By creating your own clothes, you're saving up money. You are buying less, but you aren't wearing less. In other words, your wardrobe doesn't suffer at all, even though you're saving money.

In order to be able to do this though, you might need to spend a little money on buying yourself a reliable sewing machine online or from your local dealer. If you're short on cash, a used machine will do the job just fine. Consider this as an investment because it will pay out relatively soon, since it will save you money in the long run.

A benefit of making your own clothes is the possibility of expanding your wardrobe without spending more money than usual. It's simple really, if the money you would spend on one piece of clothing allows you to make two of those pieces instead, the math is clear. You get double the amount of clothes than you would if you bought finished ones.

You can buy fabrics online or at your local craft shops for a small amount of money. Then you can make beautiful creations with your sewing machine and upgrade your wardrobe to fit the latest fashion trends. Silk, velvet, or even fur garment will cost you much less if you make them yourself. A finished silk dress from the store on the other hand, could swallow up your yearly apparel budget in no time!

Making your own clothes is also, eco-friendly without a doubt. Especially if you get the necessary materials in second hand shops, or if you repurpose your old stuff. When you stop paying money for finished clothing, you stop supporting factories that harm the environment.

If you have the desire to go green, eco-friendly sewing makes for a great start. If you don't have enough fabric for a dress, don't rush to buy more. You can combine it with a different fabric and make an original mi-parti style shirt or a dress. Got a shirt you don't wear often? With a few alterations, you can turn it into a fashionable skirt in no time. With the scrap fabric leftover from your projects you can fill up pillows  and poufs

By making the most of what you have, you are reducing waste and doing your part in keeping the planet clean.

Would you like to start making your own clothes? If you do, I hope you'll enjoy every second of it.
