Bohemian Lifestyle Blogger

I have over 17,000 Pinterest followers, 2,600 facebook followers and almost 1,000 email subscribers and I'm willing to bet that only 1% of all of these followers know anything about me personally.
Who's fault is that?
Mine, all mine.

It was never my intentions to start a blog and hide behind a catchy name and a single profile photo while I crank out post after post about bohemian fashion, life hacks and home decor.  That's just what happened and I say I only have myself to blame for it because even when I realized that I was my own ghost writer, I didn't do much to change it. Well, I kind of did. I started featuring myself more in product reviews, but that's about it.

Soooo... here I am! Let's get to know me! Here are some facts about me using a cute little questionnaire I found online along some questions I got from Facebook for a more in depth look.

Hollie Danielle Black-Ramsey

Where do you currently live?
Texarkana, TX

Where are you from?
East Texas.

What's your age and star sign?
32, Aries

Religion?
Christian, non-denominational but I am a member of a presbyterian church.

Are you married?
Yup. Been married for 7 years.

Married May 8, 2010

Do you have any children?
Indeed I do. A four year old boy named River and a two year old girl named Cedar.

How many pets?
None. I love animals but not enough to want to have one in my house all the time.

Current occupation?
"Retired" owner and director of the Texarkana Renaissance Faire, work from home mom, blogger, social media manager and entertainer wannabe.

How long have you been blogging?
I started my first blog, Broke Creative Bride about  6 years ago. It was a blog about how to have a cool low budget alternative themed wedding (hippie, retro, gothic, etc). Pinterest started to get big and most people were getting inspiration from there and I felt like my blog was no longer needed so I closed it down.

Hobbies?

Dancing (currently learning Russian gypsy dance), learning to play musical instruments, going to any event the encourages dressing up in costume,  thrift shopping and learning fun facts about history and random useless trivia about everything.

Obsessions?
Happiness and beautiful things.

Phobias?
Snakes, big city driving, falling asleep and heights.

What makes you happy?
Money, gaudy jewelry, dressing up in costumes and my son's soft, fat, squishy cheeks.

What really irritates you?
House work.

What makes you sad?
Seeing people not fulfilling their dreams, whether by choice or by circumstance.

What makes you angry?
People who don't take responsibly for themselves and blame others for their poor decisions.

What are your goals?
To raise brilliant children, lose 100lbs for my health, open a much needed bohemian/hippie shop in my town, create a giant world culture celebration festival and to start my own gothic themed (animal free) circus.

If you were granted 3 wishes, what would they be?
World peace, the ability to eat whatever I want without it affecting my health and/or weight and $60,000,000,000 (I've got good intentions, I promise).

Favorite color?
I love them all but jewel tones really tickle my fancy.

I don't do sports.

On a deeper level...

When did you first discover the Bohemian decor/lifestyle? Was it something you always liked or a discovery you made?

I've always been very eclectic and I guess you could say eccentric as well. I've always dressed to express myself, I'm very creative and romantic and my surroundings always reflect my personality and tastes. That in and of itself is bohemian.

For the second part of the question the answer is yes and yes. I've always been bohemian on the inside and my home has always been decorated bohemian style but I didn't actually start "dressing the part" until about six years ago. I wanted to dress bohemian so badly but at the "ripe old age" of 26, I was fearing that I was already getting too old to dress like that. Around that time I started keeping up with a lot of amazing 40+ bloggers who are total bohemians and eccentrics who helped me realize that I'm definitely not too old to dress the way I want! Now my outsides match my insides and I feel great!

If we were to find your name and face on the cover of a magazine, what magazine would it be, and what would the article inside be about?
Architectural Digest! I'd love to be featured for living in an awesome purple victorian mansion. I don't currently live in a purple victorian mansion but darn it, someday I will!

What made you decide to start a ren faire in Texarkana?
For anyone new here, I created my town's annual renaissance faire 6 years ago.
The faire started off as an idea for a large renaissance style party for me and my friends and their friend's friends and so on. After coming up with fun features and games and entertainment, the concept started to grow to the point where I was planning an actual renaissance faire. I was on a roll and I'm very much a doer than a dreamer so I started a small team of helpers, contacted the local fairgrounds, raised money, and BOOM! A renaissance faire was born!

Texarkana Renaissance Faire cast 2014

I had two babies during all of this and my stress levels were going through the roof trying to manage the faire, a blog full time and take care of my family. A LOT goes into planning an event of this size, especially with such a small team of helpers and I was stretching myself too thin.

The faire began to grow and grow I just couldn't handle it on my own anymore. The cast and crew was becoming very large and I was struggling to maintain any sense of authority. I was getting overlooked as the boss and many people began to create their own rules and clubs and I was pretty much getting trampled on by my own creation. For the sake of my sanity I quit the faire. But I couldn't dare bring myself to pull the plug on the event after all that hard word and growth so I gave the faire to my assistant director so he could become the new owner and director. Now I'm just kind of an advisor and I direct the gypsy camp and play Daniella Noir the Gypsy Queen.

Why do you consider yourself a Bohemian Mama, and when did this begin?
Simply put, because I'm a bohemian and a mama! Hee hee! A brief back story: when my first child was born 4 years ago I started a parenting blog called Modern Colors Two which was a spin off of my personal blog Modern Colors. I decided to turn Modern Colors Two into a for-profit blog and knew I needed a "stickier" brand name. I put three words together that describe me and my lifestyle and what I will be blogging about and "Quirky Bohemian Mama" is what I came up with.

I feel that I am a bohemian mama because my husband and I raise our children in a rather unconventional fashion. We don't follow trends for toys or TV shows and we don't really keep up with mainstream entertainment. Our children are fairly "unplugged" (no video games or tablets, minimum TV) to promote imagination fueled play. We probably focus more on arts, culture and education for our children's development more than the average American family does.

Do you meditate? If so to what? Incense? Favorite place to meditate?
I'm far too type-A to have any kind of a sit-in-silence type meditation routine. You're probably thinking, "well, that's what mediation is for" but I simply cannot bring myself to sit and do nothing even though it's exactly what I need to do because I'm so uptight!!

I have an anxiety disorder and I will use guided meditation videos to help me with that when I get too riled up, maybe once a month. I listen to the Honest Guys' guided meditations on YouTube. They have many different videos for many different issues including anger, depression and even pain management. Their voices and music are soooooo soothing. I highly recommend their channel to anyone suffering from stress and/or anxiety. I don't use incense when I meditate as I find the fragrances to be too stimulating at a time when I need to calm down.

There's a little bit more about me and my blog on my bio page HERE. You can keep up with a little bit of my personal life and fashion at my other blog Modern Colors.

So tell me, how much do we have in common?

  5. Hi Hallie! You sound like a person I'd like to hang out with - joyful, impulsive, witty, and smart. I've been on this earth for more than six decades, and my inner hippie love child is finally emerging. The colors, the attitude, the ambience bring me happiness (as do my horses, donkeys, dogs, cats and chickens). I also struggle with chronic depression/anxiety, and boy howdy, I LOVE the Honest Guys!
I'm thoroughly enjoying your blog. Thank you for sharing part of your life with us!
