Historical halloween costumes for boys

In this post, I tried my best to feature a wide variety of men from many different eras but my main focus was to create a costume that will be easily recognized so it would be very clear who your son is supposed to be dressed up as (or at least will take very little explanation).

If you choose one of these men below as inspiration for your son's costume, I would like to encourage you to use the opportunity to teach him a few facts and fun trivia about the person. A Wikipedia article, a fun YouTube video, or a book from the library will be able to guide you. Hopefully your son will become interested in not only the person, but their work, their industry and perhaps the entire era in which they lived.

ENJOY!

NEIL ARMSTRONG
(1930 - 2012)
Neil  Armstrong was an American astronaut and the first person to walk on the Moon.... or so they say... (cue ominous music)

SCOTT JOPLIN
(1868 - 1917)
Known as the King of Ragtime, Scott Joplin was born right here in Texarkana or possibly Linden, TX. I currently live in Texarkana and went to school in Linden so this one is kind of more for me. You might not have the patience to lug around tiny piano for your son, but a small black keyboard could probably get the point across of who he's supposed to be,

FRANK ABAGNALE
(1948 - )
Probably not the most recognizable costume but definitely the coolest and most interesting. Have you seen the movie "Catch Me if You Can" starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Tom Hanks? Yeah, that Frank Abagnale. Although Abagnale is still alive and well, mark my words - that man will be in textbooks as being the most clever criminal of all time. Although Frank committed a series of fraudulent crimes in his youth, successfully posing as a doctor, lawyer, and airplane pilot, he is now working honestly as the CEO of his own company that advises companies on fraud issues and has even worked for the FBI.

MUHAMMAD ALI
(1942 - 2016)
Ali was an Olympic and professional boxer and civil rights activist.  He is widely regarded as being one of the greatest boxers of all time winning 56 out of his 61 matches. Impressive!

CHARLES LINDBERGH
(1902-1974)
Lindbergh made the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean on May 20-21, 1927. Other pilots had crossed the Atlantic before him but Lindbergh was the first person to do it alone nonstop.
Personally, I'd make an airplane out of a cardboard box that my child could slip on and wear. See examples and tutorials HERE. If you go this route, don't forget to paint "Spirit of St. Louis" on the side!
Do you have a daughter? This outfit could easily become an Amelia Earhart or Bessie Coleman costume! Just tie a white chiffon scarf around her neck for a touch of femininity.

THURGOOD MARSHALL
(1908 - 1933)
Marshall was the first black Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Before becoming a judge, Marshall was a lawyer who was best known for his high success rate in arguing before the Supreme Court and for the victory in Brown v. Board of Education, a decision that desegregated public schools. Now that's hardcore!

HENRY VIII
(1491- 1547)
Henry Tudor was King of England from 21 April 1509 until his death and we all know what he was most famous for... ahem... but still a part of history. If you really want to "Henry-up" the costume, find a red adhesive beard and moustache or just draw one on your son with lipliner.

ANDY WARHOL
(1928 - 1987)
Warhol is best known for being a leader in the pop art movement. He was incredibly popular, had tons of wacky friends, and had a sweet hangout spot called The Factory. If your son has a sister she should totally dress up as Twiggy!

JACKIE ROBINSON
(1919-1972)
Robinson was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball and considering the  fact that this took place in 1947 when segregation was in full affect, this was no small deal. The full costume set from www.grandslamnewyork.com consists of the jersey, hat and pants for $70 with the option to add socks. This is a very good deal considering the Robinson Jersey alone runs about $50.

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
(1796 - 1821)
I threw this one in more for humor than anything else. Legend has it that this self-crowned emperor of France was a teeny tiny little guy so I think it would be quite funny for a kid to dress up as him for Halloween. Historians have gathered that Napoleon was about 5'6 - a tad on the short side for a guy these days but quite normal for a man in that era - but still c'mon, let's have fun.
