Is Amazon the New Etsy?

I love Etsy but to be honest I'm loving it less and less every time I visit. It's no longer the 100% handmade marketplace full of all kinds of original arts and crafts like it used to be.
Now it's full of mass produced stuff from China that you can get just about anywhere and what's even worse is these sellers are are selling these things with over 1,000% markup. I've seen jewelry pieces from China on eBay going for $.99 each. On Etsy, that exact same jewelry will be going for $10 or more. Even formal dresses from China go for about $20 on eBay but $220 on Etsy. Totes not fair.
The goods from China on sites like this are often terrible quality and the sizes run incredibly small.
But why is Etsy like this now?

My best guess is because technically all of that stuff is handmade. Not our idea of handmade or even what Etsy envisioned at first but still someone used their hands to make it - so it's handmade. Tsk, tsk, tsk.
There could be some other reason behind Etsy's lax guidelines - this is just a theory.

I'm not an Etsy hater or anything like that - I still buy from there. I just hate how hard it is to sort out the junk from the good handmade items.
Anywho, a few months ago I found that Amazon now has a handmade section and I was stupid excited about it. I've been meaning to share the news forever but heck, I just plain forgot.

The categories for their handmade items are:
Jewelry
Handbags & Accessories
Home Decor
Artwork
Stationery & Party Supplies
Kitchen & Dining
Furniture
Bedding
Baby
Toys & Games

The cool thing is I have found that if anything in the handmade section is mass produced overseas, it's in small batches, most likely fair trade and supports a worthy cause.
Now, I HAVE come across a few sellers that are selling non-originals, especially in the accessories department, but those impostors are fairly easy to spot and I hope Amazon cracks down on that instead of caving in.

I'd like to share with you a few of my favorite picks from the Amazon handmade section. Click on each item for purchase info.

ENJOY!

Now that you've seen a little taste of what Amazon has to offer in the handmade department, let's talk about becoming a seller. What are the differences between selling on Etsy and Amazon?

Etsy has 25 million active shoppers and Amazon has whopping 244 million.

Etsy’s fees are $0.20 per item listed + 3.5% of all sales.
Amazon has no listing fees, but takes 12% of all sales.

Here's a little math to put this into perspective:

If you sell one item on Etsy for $10, after fees you will end up with $9.46 profit.
If you sell onw item on Amazon for $10, after fess you will end up with $8.80 profit.

That may sound like a big difference but in the long run it could pay off with being exposed to such a significantly larger audience.

  1. Aimee and I were just talking about this. She sells her sewing creations on Etsy and has been there since the beginning. She said many of the Chinese companies steal designs and sell cheap knock-offs. Too bad; small artisans need a place to market their stuff.

  2. I have been an Etsy seller for 9 years now - and it has been terrific. I have literally sold thousands of my paintings. I signed up and did the Amazon handmade back last December. Here is the problem with Amazon: you are not seen. They start sending you emails to 'advertise' at crazy-high prices. The fees are higher, and then in order to get ANY views, they want more. And I have seen a couple companies on Amazon stealing my paintings (literally using a photo of the painting with my signature and everything). You can bet that most of the artisans selling on Amazon are there to be found on eBay & Etsy as well. For me, Etsy & eBay are still better for my business.

  3. I have sold on Etsy and Ebay and knew about this Amazon thing but haven't really looked into it. I am steampunking some vintage dolls for sale this holiday season, so I will keep track of how well that does.
BTW I absolutely adore your new About Me image - the outfit so colorful and attractive on you AND matches your blog header.
